BUCKMASTER ATTACKS BACKPAGE...AGAIN

We question Jim Buckmaster's motivations with regards to his latest attacks on backpage.com. He is well aware that we moderate content and he has painstakingly trolled our content to find the most controversial postings. His blog does not represent the vast majority of legal content found on our site. It appears to us Jimmy doesn't like the competition and is using his blog to trash us.

Here are some examples of Jimmy's hypocrisy:

  • He cited examples where backpage ads wouldn't pass his moderation standards. Well, here are two ads clearly indicating code terms for anal sex that he failed to remove from his own site. Careful, these links contain adult-oriented images.

  1. * B-B-B-J ,G*R*E*E*K, C*I*M &ASK ABOUT MORE

  2. Specializing in --- G.`R.`E.`E.`K.` --- And any other service you can think of.

  • Canada deserves the same protections as the US. Craigslist does not collect credit card info for postings in the adult categories in Canada. Why wouldn't he want to better prevent under aged adult service postings in Canada by requiring payment to post?

  • Craigslist is well aware adult ad posters have migrated to personals where it is free to post. Charging the user is the best way to deter a post by an under aged person. Backpage is now charging in these categories to control these postings. We trolled thru Craigslist personals and found numerous sex acts pics and adult postings. Why are they still free in sexually oriented categories?

We led the way in the past when we charged for adult postings and craigslist was free, unmoderated, and out of control. Backpage is now taking further steps to control postings by charging in personals categories prone to abuse. We think Craigslist may wish to follow suit in their personals categories. Charging the user is the best way to insure a posting conforms to a site's terms of use.

Backpage.com employs a large staff to moderate content. The site uses moderation, automated filters and user reporting to remove postings that violate our terms of use. Instead of attacking other sites, we plan to move forward on our plans to add more staff and development resources to improve our own moderation efforts.

We are very proud of the robust classified community we have grown over the last few years serving all categories of classified users. We have become the second largest all purpose classified site in North America, but Craigslist is still 20 to 30 times larger. We are OK with that as we continue to grow and constantly upgrade our ability to serve our users but we wonder why the CL 800 pound gorilla has such enmity for us. Are they afraid of competition?

  1. Who are you kidding? Now only spammers post on backpage adult personals. You charge only for the sake of making money. The best method to deal with spammers is to make it easy to knock down their fake post's. You have just made the spammers pay you and in the process have deterred and lost any and all real people who where posting on your site. You have some nerve to talk smack on craigslist while you have nothing but fake post on your adult personal sections who are protected because they basically pay you a bribe.

  6. As an ex-Craigslist user, I appreciate Backpage so much. I find a much better class of clientele. I don't have to appologise to people who call me looking for a service I choose not to provide. What truly disgusts my about C.L. is the fact that they are "in bed" with the police and that gives me and anyone else who advertises on there a big red flag, just because of having an ad in C.L. It had become an embarassment to be in there. They are the Posting Pimps of the internet.

  8. It's not the Adult Services ads that bother me so much - you play in your sandbox and I'll play in mine - what DOES bother me about Craigs nowadays is how many rules and regulations there are governing legitimate posts in mainstream categories and how agressive the spam filters have become...to the point of blocking perfectly harmless ads. Just check-out the Help Desk forums - the situation is worse than ridiculous.

  11. I just found out about this site today. I cannot believe they have a pets section that promotes the sale of pets when 12 million are put down annually in this country.
There seems to be no rules that I can find regarding pet sales. I can't see where they are compliant of the law of the different state and city rules.
I don't care what adults do with their lives but do care deeply about the pets that have no say.
Another crappy site for the pets..uggg

  12. What a fascinating thread.

Charging for adult postings is clearly responsible because it connects credit card details to adverts, increasing accountability. Adverts for Greek seems to be a red herring but I agree that craigslist have no reason to act superior.

  13. You're talking a big ass joke right now, carl!

"Backpage.com employs a large staff to moderate content. The site uses moderation, automated filters and user reporting to remove postings that violate our terms of use."

Why haven't I received ONE email back, from any 3 of your email addresses that are listed on the site?

Your staff edits my adult advertisement AND removed 12 RUNNING advertisements. *"community flagged"* Community of WHAT, you ask? Community of OTHER escorts, Carl. There was absolutely nothing wrong with this ad especially in comparison to the thousands of ads with blatant sex solicitation in them. I posted an ad today, under another email, AN OLD ONE I had registered - it was flagged & removed, without notice AND there was NOTHING, not ONE thing sexually related, any sexually explicit photos.. nothing.

My ADS are gone - when 100s of other crap ads are up.. Please help me understand.

  15. Good luck:) Now that Craigslist is officially censored, CNN and NBC will be after you next. Bye, bye adult services ... guess you should have helped Craigslist instead of arguing with Jim :)

  17. Why's everyone picking on Carl? BP isn't perfect, and I've had my fair share of BP employees moving my ads from the section I put them in (while leaving other ads obviously miscategorized), having another ad "community removed" without basis, etc, and have spent entire days trying to reach someone, anyone.

But that being said, BP is at least honest enough to call itself a business. Maybe it's an understaffed one. Maybe one that will improve with time. But it's a business nonetheless.

That's unlike CL, which still hides behind it's ".org" and interviews where they spew nonsense about how they're soft hearted hippies running a "grassroots" organization out of an old house. The reality is that they're making money hand over fist and will call themselves "grassroots" when it suits them or a "business" when that suits them more. During the free posting era, they allowed outright chaos: gang flagging, harassment posts, and outright threats without any kind of intervention or recourse to the people being targeted (and yet they always talk about how they "care" in interviews). CL would talk about how "grassroots" they were and then on the other hand brag about their huge traffic (usually in a post whining about BP having less traffic and/or then getting more because it was diverted from CL). Do the math - the huge traffic Buckmaster talks about times what they were charging for adult ads and still charge for ads in many other categories equals quite a chunk of change.

BP has a simple, straightforward, fast posting process, and allows unlimited edits after the fact. It doesn't take all day long to put up a single post like CL. That's if CL didn't reject the post after many hours had first been wasted - when the post did nothing to violate terms of service (and while allowing hordes of posts that flagrantly violated them to mysteriously post no problem). With CL you could be the one person actually respecting the rules and for your trouble get banned, flagged nonstop, have your posts refused, etc. You could spend more of your waking hours caught in some negative spiral than actually productively working or going about your day. Never been a problem on BP.

The attorneys will certainly take their witch hunt everywhere they can. But whoever said BP should have "helped" CL... How, exactly? Buckmaster spent his time blogging and childlishly attacking BP - for what, existing? Not catching the same flak? Was that BP's fault? BP was just going about their business, not trying to hurt CL. Buckmaster didn't want BP's "help". He just wanted to whine. Good riddance to CL's "erotic services" AND "adult services".
